I just bought Star Blaze 2 and noticed the vat is a very high 19%. Shouldn't it be 15%? Never seen 19% vat before. Isn't it illegal to charge 19% vat if its UK vat?

The standard rate has been changed to 15% from 1 December 2008 and Star Blaze cost me 19%.

The VAT percentage that is applicable on all orders (online or bank transfer) is depending on where you live and if you're ordering for a company or for personal use. The VAT will be added to the product price. In most cases this will be 0% and no VAT will be charged.
* Customer is NOT a EC member country resident or company: 0% VAT will be charged.
* Dutch residents or companies: 19% VAT (BTW) will be charged.
* EU companies registered for VAT and providing their VAT number: 0% VAT will be charged.
* EU residents not registered for VAT (personal use): 19% VAT will be charged. |

So I apologize if you felt coned but that is the EU policy and the policy of on line registrators.

That's not EU policy. EU policy is each member state must set its own Vat rate up following a set of rules. The UK was 17.5% but was changed down to 15% recently. Every other shop I use online is 15% but used to be 17.5%. As far as I can tell charging more than 15% is illegal.
"The European Union itself does not collect the tax, but member states of the European Union are required to adopt VAT laws which comply with the EU VAT system. A percentage of the VAT collected by member states is used to fund the European Union."
"Different rates of VAT apply in different EU member states. The minimum standard rate of VAT throughout the EU is 15%,"
The UK state is at 15%.

Some shops do it as a con. The shop charges 19% Vat, the UK gets 15% while the shop keeps the other 4% Vat as a hidden profit.
