Did you run DOS and go to the directory C:\WINDOWS and edit the 'system.ini' file as follows?

Change: shell=C:\ASTON\ASTON.EXE
To this: shell=explorer.exe

Is this what you tried and didn't work?

Do this....
1. turn on computer and continue pushing F8 until the safemode box appears.
2. choose the start computer in DOS option
3. at the C:\ type the word "edit" and press enter
4. use tab to move between fields and I think it is either alt F or Ctrl F to open and save files
5. find the system.ini file within the Windows dirrectory
6. edit the line shell=
7. your new shell line needs to be shell=c:\windows\explorer.exe
8. SAVE the changes and reboot

If you can't get through by editing the system.ini you will need to install Windows. I would install it over the old version to get up and running with the least BS.
To do this change your CMOS to start from the CDROM drive. Insert the Win98SE disk and restart the PC. Once started it will ask if you want to start Windows set-up-yes.

By doing the install this way you are only replacing system files but your other apps and files should be untouched.

Good luck and I hope you get through ok.

C:\aston\shdoctor.exe -- it should fix your aston problems. (if you installed aston to somewhere other than C:\aston\ then change C:\aston\ to whatever you installed it to ^_^)
