When your computer startsup you get a boot screen which is in \system32\ntoskrnl.exe ,and then a logon screen with "welcome" written on it (logonui.exe). Where is the shutdown screen and how can i change it?
To me it's dissapointing to be usiing an alternative shell like Aston - only to see the microsoftxp start up and shutdown screens spring into life. I mean I have this cool aston desktop set up and when I shut down I get microsoft standard - completely ruins the feel man! To me any decent shell alternative should have an option to change these for you built in! Couldn't somone make such a little prog. for aston. Thou as i said it should come built in.

The Shutdown dialog box is controlled by msgina.dll. Google "msgina.dll +hack" and you should find an answer. As for Aston shell handling this, I assume it could be done (does WindowBlinds allow this?). Unless WindowBlinds can do this with it's own coding, I am not sure of any way to achieve this without hacking msgina.dll. No company (that doesn't want a lawsuit) would "modify" Windows files unless the modification was in compliance with the M$ EULA or had explicit permission from M$ to modify core operating system files. WindowBlinds operates in this fashion. Instead of patching the uxtheme.dll which is a M$ file and easy to do, WB uses it's own skinning engine to handle what the native skinning engine would do. So it could be done, someone would just have to implement a program for it.

you can go to stardock.com and download a bootscreen editor (I forget the exact name) and LogonStudio, these both will do what you are asking. And they are stable, and free.

dwnloaded logon studio but it told me i needed a microsoft .net passport and I dont want to download that and intall it.
I just think that the shut down screen especially spoils the whole feel of the thing! I dont want ot see a micros soft screen.

LogonStudio asked for a .NET Passport???? Shocked
I've been using LogonStudio for years now, and I have never seen it ask for that. You're using the program found at this link, correct:
http://www.download.com/LogonStudio/3000-2344_4-10328444.html?tag=lst-0-1
If it asks for a .NET Passport, just cancel or look for a Skip button/link.

ya, I didn't ever have to have a .NET password either. That's weird.

Really? That's odd as well. See, my Windows XP is an nlited install, and one of the things removed was the .net framework. I have BootSkin and LogonStudio both installed on that system and don't ever recall seeing that pop up. Hrmm... I'll tell you what. If you REALLY want to have a custom logon/shutdown screen, you can PM me and I'll get my information together and let you know of another way than LogonStudio and/or BootSkin. However, be warned. The alternate way involves a decent amount of registry work and file/resource hacking. Thus it will break the M$ EULA, and has a decent potential of breaking your system if you mess up. (Break as in => reinstall Windows). Installing LogonStudio and/or BootSkin is your safest, easiest route.

Thanks for the help. Problem now solved. I found an older version of logon studio that I had installed on my xp pro (service pack1) computer. I just copied the programe folder off the hard drive and put it on my laptop and it works! so I must have just downloaded a latest version that is more fussy. the laptop has xp home service pack 2.
thanks for the help.
