|
|
I recently downloaded and installed the trial of AltDesk 1.8, and right off the bat, using the default settings with 3 virtual desktops, I noticed that if I switch back to my first desktop (the one with my icons) to another, certain icons would move. Initially this was just the "AltDesk Desktops" folder icon itself (I have Windows set to view all hidden folders) and a shortcut to a demo of Battlefield 2142 labeled "Battlefield 2142 Demo". They would move down a certain number of spaces each time, moving over to a new column each time they would run out of space in their current column. I tried deleting the Battlefield shortcut to see if that would stop it, but instead it's now causing an entire half-column of game shortcuts to move down a spot each time, while leaving the AltDesk folder alone! Has anyone encountered a similar problem?

I have had this problem as well, on my home computer and my work computer, and have tried any number of times to move icons around on the desktop to try and stop them from moving -- no luck! But surely this is happening to other people as well; I'm surprised there aren't more postings about this. Would really love a solution to this because it's one of the few things that bug me about this program.

" i_sniff_blue!"
is that a response? I mean, I can see very well that's the user name of the person *I* replied to, saying that I have had the same problem the s/he has...but beyond that I'm not sure what BillW50 is trying to say.

Sorry, seaotter64. I believe that BillW50 was confused on the post (since the OP posted it 2007). Personally, I have experience this bug. However, I have only experience it while using the option for separate icons on each desktop. If you do not use specific icons on specific desktops and do not care if all desktops have the same folders, shortcts, and files on them, then disable the option. Right-click on the AltDesk icon in the system tray (notification area) and click on Preferences. Click on "General" in the left pane. Then, in the right pane look for the "General Behavior" section. The first option in that section should say "Individual set of icons for each Desktop". Uncheck that box. As for using the "Individual set of icons for each Desktop" and the icons rearranging themselves on desktop changes; I have not been able to find a solution. Therefore, I classify it as a bug. Maybe Kess has some insight on this.

Thanks!! That's really not a bad idea -- I should have thought of that! I'll try it!

This is a known issue. This is how AltDesk behaves in Explorer shell when desktop icons are arranged by grid and you have individual set of icons for each desktop option enabled. Please disable either of them.

Thanks very much for your reply. As suggested by Liderc, I copied all my icons to Desktop 1 and then removed the preference setting for individual icon sets for each desktop. Since then I have had no further problems.

I'm running AltDesk on an XP-64 machine and am having the problem of the icons snapping back to auto-arrange even though I have that option turned off. I DO have the individual icons on desktops ticked. It didn't seem to occur with the 32-bit version so not sure if it's particular to the 64-bit O/S?

I doubt that the OS being x64 has an effect on this. If you have your desktop arranged using "align to grid", try disabling that option and see if it helps.

Didn't THINK it would have any effect but.....
I don't have either align to grid or auto-arrange on. :/
Also just noticed that the "shared" icons are not sharing.
Things that I have done so far:
- Uninstalled the application, removed all registry references, folders and application settings.
- Made sure that both the auto-align and the align to grid settings were off before re-installing.
- Thinking it was a setting within AltDesk that I had missed, I copied my .ini file from the original computer to the new one.
Still have the same issue.

Interesting. Could you please post a copy of your altdesk.ini, I can take a look at it. Also, what other active programs do you normally have running (anti-virus, etc.)? Also, are you using any shell software (Aston, etc.)?
I don't have this problem on my system (Vista Business x64 & Windows 7 Beta x64), so I don't think it is specific to a x64 OS. Though, I'll give it a try in a VM using XP-64 (your OS, correct?) to see if I can replicate the issue. Again, the more information you can post the easier it will be to replicate the issue.

It gets a little murky here. On startup I have:
- Sophos
- VNC Server
- Video Card Control Center (ATI Catalyst)
- Logitech Mouse driver
The only difference between my current computer and my previous is the Video Card. (I'll try disabling that and see if that might be the issue.)
Generally, I'm running Outlook, Track-It, IE7 and our ERP software, all of which is the same between the systems.
The .ini file is:

I've also attached a SS of the arrange options for the desktop just in case.

Excellent. I'll run this in my XP x64 VM and see what I can come up with.

As an update, I completely removed all of the Catalyst software (thinking that it might be some kind of override there) and then tried AltDesk again. Still snaps back to the same position.
